KAT · the one fixed star
Keeps the human cost from becoming a number, without ever making a spectacle of it.
“Somebody's Tuesday was inside that. I'd like to know whose.”
Not a number that behaves. She has been the same age in four different decades.
Nowhere she'll name — she arrives with a new persona in every era, and the only constant is that she has already been where the story is going.
Jet-black hair streaked violet and fuchsia that seems to absorb light and give it back; all-white, pupil-less eyes fixed on everything at once.
She is only ever partly here. She talks about the people in a case the way you talk about someone you have already met and already lost, and it is never clear to anyone in the room whether that is a figure of speech.
She is the panel's brake on the thriller instinct. When a case has a body count, a marriage, a ward full of postponed surgeries, a twenty-two-year-old who saved the world and then got arrested — she is booked, and the episode slows down.
She never sensationalises and never sentimentalises. She just refuses to let the number stay a number, and asks about the person nobody in the reporting followed up on.
Asks questions instead of making claims. The only one on the panel who says *somebody* and means one specific person.
A hospital's postponed-surgery list from a case three episodes back
Nobody else asked for it. She reads names off it the way other people cite figures.
